HOUSTON -The Houston Public Library invites you to experience the sights and sounds of Houston’s Latino music history through the decades. The exhibit ¡MÚSICA! A History of Hispanic Sounds in Houston captures key moments through the decades of the vast impact Hispanics make on the Bayou City and its music. Journey back to dances at the Pan American and good times at the first Chicano and Conjunto Festivals. Learn about Lydia Mendoza, the “First Lady of Tejano;” Ventura Alonzo, the “Queen of the Accordion;” and the gifted pianist, Patricio Gutierrez and the Houston Symphony, the Ricky Diaz Orchestra, and the Zenteno family.

Hear oral histories from those who played, promoted and participated behind the scenes. Items on display are from the Hispanic Archival Collections at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC), part of the Houston Public Library, and some are on loan.

Exhibit will be on view August 24, 2019 through November 9, 2019 at the Julia Ideson Building, Exhibit Hall located at 550 McKinney St., 77002. Visit www.houstonlibrary.org or call 832-393-1313 for more information on the exhibit and on parking. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
